Cairn Curran

Overview
Located on the Loddon River, approx 10 kilometres west of Maldon and downstream from Newstead, the catchment area covers 1593 square kilometres. The water levels are currently quite low compared to when it was constructed over 50 years ago. Large floodgates allow any excess water to be released when necessary. The area is surrounded by native garden, picnic and BBQ facilities, and shelters with areas for bathing even though the water levels are low at the present time. Boat launching facilities are also available and the area is sometimes used for sailing and fishing.
History
Constructed between 1947 and 1956 one of the main functions of the reservoir was to ensure water supply to irrigated properties along the Loddon River.
