Colbinabbin / Corop

Overview
These two villages mark either side of the Corop Wine Region. The region is a shallow valley with picturesque vineyards scattered across the gently sloping hillsides. The floor of the valley opens out into two shallow lakes, Lake Cooper and Lake Green. Lake Cooper is the headquarters of the Victorian Ski Association. Unfortunately it has been dry for eight years now, and currently undulates with shifting sand dunes. Corop is also home to a major quarry. Locations in Corop range from Tuscany, to the surface of Mars! A unique combination.
History
Colbinabbin and Corop were first settled in the 1850s, with Corop township established in the 1860s and Colbinabbin in the 1870s. In the 1930s the area had significant change with the construction of the Waranga - Mallee channel, which dissects the town of Cobinabbin.
Irrigation altered land use between the two towns and has made it very productive farmland. Cereal cropping, tomato growing and livestock production has been important, and recent years have seen a boom in wine growing.
