Lake Eppalock

Overview

Situated 30 minutes from Bendigo, Lake Eppalock is a man-made lake with a capacity 300 gigalitres.  The curved dam wall is 700 metres long, 47 metres high and contains more than 800,000 cubic metres of earth and rock.  When full the lake covers an area of over 3,000 hectares, however at the time of writing (November 2009) the water storage was less than 10% of capacity.

The lake's recreational facilities include picnic areas, boat ramps, caravan sites and campgrounds, and the lake is bordered by State Forest areas.

History

Lake Eppalock was constructed in the early 1960s to support irrigation and supply water for Bendigo.  It has been a popular recreation site for power-boating, sailing, camping and picnicking.

In the current drought water levels have dropped to less than 10% capacity, limiting these activities significantly.
