Redesdale

Overview
Redesdale is a small community situated on the Kyneton Road. The historic Redesdale Tavern constructed of bluestone is one of the highlights of Redesdale with a rich history as a former Cobb & Co stop for travellers on their way to the Bendigo gold fields.
The Campaspe river has run just beside where Redesdale is now located for thousands of years, cutting its way deep into the earth creating steep embankments and exposing large rocks from volcanic flows.
History
Following the exploration of Major Mitchell in 1836, the area around Redesdale was taken up by squatters in the late 1830s. Following the gold rush in 1852 the Redesdale pub was built – then re-built with local bluestone in 1856.
There are a number of stories concerning the Redesdale bridge, opened in 1868, however the general consensus is that the iron lattice bridge, built in the United Kingdom, was originally intended to span the Yarra at Hawthorn.
